Pregnant or Parenting Students
The Dean of Students Office is dedicated to supporting University of Michigan students who are pregnant or parenting. Whether you need individual support or want to connect with a community of other student parents, contact us to go over resources and next steps.
Disengaged Students
It can be difficult to know whether a student is missing or simply not communicating. If you haven’t heard from a student and are concerned for their well-being, the Dean of Students Office is here to help. Reach out to us directly, and we will help you navigate next steps while prioritizing the student’s safety and privacy.
Grief Support and Assistance
Death of a Loved One
When a student faces the loss of a loved one, the Dean of Students Office is available to provide support and assistance. We can help you access grief support through University Health and Counseling, assist in notifying faculty members or other campus partners as appropriate, determine what to do if you miss classes, and coordinate other support that you may need.
Death of a Student
When our community faces the loss of a fellow student, DOS provides direct guidance, resources, and comfort to grieving families, partners, friends, and the campus community.
Coordination and notifications
Please contact our office directly to report a student death. We immediately alert university departments—like the Registrar, Financial Aid, and Housing—to pause communications and ease the burden on the family. Our team can also help organize local memorial services, coordinate vigils, or share details about local funeral homes and cemeteries.
Supporting friends and classmates
We offer emotional relief and logistics care for roommates, friends, and classmates. If you are worried about a peer who is struggling with grief, contact us to request a supportive check-in. Grieving students can also reach out to us to request academic notifications for professors, arrange temporary housing relocations, or find other daily needs.
Memorial services
Each spring, we host a Campus Memorial Service to honor University of Michigan students who have passed away during the academic year. The service welcomes families, friends, and members of our campus community. Please notify our office to ensure your loved one is recognized, even if you do not need other administrative support.
